Gendai ni Ikiru (Public Domain piece)
Written by Gary Tsujimoto in 1978 for San Jose Taiko, this is one of North American taiko’s most iconic pieces and is now open to the taiko public! I will teach both the naname and shime-daiko parts, breaking down the patterns and sequence.
This song showcases beautiful angled and circlular motions of naname playing, has a very compelling swung musical beat, allows for engaging solos, and builds to a powerful climax!
While I will teach a complete version of this song, I highly encourage groups to make it their own, rearranging the structure how it best suits them. This piece is high-energy, can be played at various tempos, and is a real treat for the audience!
