My original taiko compositions are below.

Some of them have a linked video while others are simply listed.

While many pieces were written while I was in San Jose Taiko, I now offer custom compositions for other groups! For more information, please check out “Custom Compositions” under the WORKSHOPS section or the button below!

Commotion (2009)

I wanted to write a fun, energetic piece with no musical solos, but instead incorporating improvised movement as a group. And Commotion was born!

I have made Commotion available to the taiko community as a public domain piece!

This is a very fast version of Commotion, played by an experienced crew. For more information about this piece, please look under the WORKSHOPS section.

Left to My Own Devices (2016)

This piece was written with a “gimmick” of the left hand continually playing on alternating drums. I would consider it a Work in Progress (WIP) that was never fully developed, but had some great potential!

Stepping Stones (2022)

This piece was commissioned by Las Vegas Kaminari Taiko and completely on katsugi okedo. The idea was to write something that would push the group’s skill on okedo, and the overall theme is that of a group of friends walking down to the lake to hang out, skip stones, and share stories. Lots of interlocking patterns, simple configurations, and funky patterns throughout!

Confabulous (2022)

This song is composed entirely of kuchishoga, the verbal notation used for taiko!

This was an idea to invite various taiko friends to recite simple kuchishoga for me to then edit into a song. I had no sheet music and no idea what I would create, but instead let the voices and energy of each individual lead me to this very fun composition!

Amiga (2014)

This piece was written for San Jose Taiko as part of the collaboration with the DJ group The Bangerz. The song title comes from the Commodore Amiga computer, specifically the Amiga 500 I grew up with in the late 80’s/early 90’s.  The Amiga was a graphics and gaming powerhouse at the time, and some of the games had music I would record on a micro-cassette recorder to listen to away from the computer.  This music influenced what I compose and what I play even today.

Whimsy (2006/2011)

Originally written as an encore piece for San Jose Taiko, this piece was re-arranged to be a lighter, more playful piece almost entirely on mobile drums (katsugi okedo, uchiwa) and featured hocketed rhythms.

Rhythmus (2001)

This piece was written for San Jose Taiko with the idea of moving around and in-between naname drums in a very regimented, clockwork style.

Mismatch (2000)

This piece was born from the idea of putting together katsugi okedo with stationary drums, lots of movement back and forth, and hocketed patterns between all the instruments.

Shinka (1999)

Co-composed with Eijiro Ikegami for San Jose Taiko, the Japanese word “Shinka” can mean “evolution” or “progress.”
